DIY Frosted Beer Mugs

Hello all! I’m here with my first DIY post! This is so exciting! What’s even more exciting is that it is a gift I made for my significant other’s birthday- custom etched glass beer mugs. I was so excited to give them; I barely waited after midnight to give them to him. He could tell I was excited. Here is the process I used to make these super personalized and inexpensive mugs.

Items used:

1. Glassware

2. Etching cream

3. Soft bristle paint brush

4. Stickers

5. Tape

6. Gloves

First, get your glassware. I found these great beer mugs at the Dollar Tree. One thing you’ll learn about me is I LOVE a good dollar store. I just went to Daiso for the first time ever a week ago…WOW. I will be going back soon. Trust.

I borrowed this etching cream from a classmate (she made us all personalized shot glasses. She’s so sweet!) I already had the paint brush.

When I watched YouTube videos on how to do this, I saw people making their own stencil from vinyl stickers. That way the wording is all uniform in size and placement. I also saw the use of pre-made stencils. I decided to use his nicknames for the wording on the mugs and did not have access to making vinyl stickers or the time. So I improvised! I have some scrapbooking stickers I have been saving for a project that hasn’t materialized yet, so I used those. I couldn’t find my painters tape, so I used clear movers tape. A little more sticky to take off afterwards, but I worked very well in keeping the etching cream from ruining the areas I wanted to stay clear.

For the first glass, I lined up the stickers encircling the glass, eyeballing for straightness. For the second glass, I blocked off a rectangle around a group of stickers in order to create an etched label. For the third glass, I placed the stickers on the glass and nothing else. I was going to create a fully frosted glass.

This is where patience comes into play. I had to take my time to ensure the etching cream doesn’t go in areas i don’t want it to go. I also had to make sure I covered each area thoroughly and evenly. The directions online say 1 minute is enough time to leave the cream on before watching off with warm water, but the longer you leave it on, the more of a frosted look you’ll get with your finished product.

I washed the etching cream off. I took off the stickers once the cream was washed off. I then took off any tape at this time as well. At this point, I was so excited! I couldn’t believe how easy it was. He couldn’t believe that I made them myself. Applause all around for this craft!

Now you can use frosted spray paint, but it’s not permanent or dishwasher safe. It is a temporary alternative though!
